Manly Warringah District Cricket Club 3rd Grade Premiers 1958-59

The club’s third-grade side enjoyed a historic and memorable season, securing its first premiership in the grade since 1921. Under the steady leadership of captain Len Carter, the team combined consistency, individual brilliance, and strong all-round performances to achieve this long-awaited success.

A key figure in the side’s dominance was Ron Watkins, who delivered an outstanding all-round season. With the ball, Watkins claimed an impressive 59 wickets, playing a pivotal role in dismantling opposition batting line-ups. His contributions were further highlighted by a remarkable hat-trick during the season. Equally effective with the bat, Watkins’ consistency earned him the team’s batting average award, underscoring his value as a genuine all-rounder.

Support in the bowling department came from Neil Fenn, who finished the season with a commendable 36 wickets, consistently applying pressure and providing crucial breakthroughs. However, it was leg spinner Reg Hunt who stood out for his exceptional efficiency, claiming the bowling average with a remarkable figure of 9.9. Hunt’s season was also marked by a hat-trick, matching Watkins in producing one of cricket’s most difficult and celebrated feats.

In the batting ranks, Alan Turner produced the standout individual innings of the campaign, scoring a season-high 99. His near-century was a highlight in a year where contributions were shared across the lineup.
