Sumair Sira – A young cricketer making his mark

Sumair Sira is quality young man who joined the Parramatta District Cricket Club for the 2024/25 season and immediately won the respect of the club’s players, coaches and administrators.

He is a gifted player with the skill and potential to forge an admirable career in cricket. He possesses all the basic talents to morph into a genuine assertive allrounder in coming seasons as he gains experience.

The willowy fast bowler has a smooth free-flowing action that generates lively speed and should facilitate added pace as the youngster’s body matures and grows stronger. Another pointer to continued bowling success is his attitude, Sumair is a fierce competitor ‘with ball in hand’ and is ‘always up for the contest.’

As a batsman he has shown fighting qualities and attacking inclinations, and to date he has made several crucial lower-middle order contributions in both Premier cricket and Poidevin-Gray teams, and in doing so he has provided ample evidence that this area of his game will develop as his experience and confidence grows. His fielding is also of a high standard – active and energetic.

This promising young cricketer was off to an exciting start in his initial season with the Parramatta club in 2024/25, he made the most of his opportunities, evidence of his capability can be gauged by the list of his achievements highlighted below:

• Made his first-grade debut for Parramatta District Cricket Club in the celebrated NSW Premier Cricket’s Belvidere Cup competition – which Parramatta won in 2024/25 – to debut at 17-years-of-age in this competition is fine feat. Parramatta First Grade Player Number: 626.
• He represented NSW Metro Under 17 team in the Australian National Championships held in Launceston. NSW won the championship.
• Represented the NSW All Schools Under 19 team.
• At the Parramatta District Cricket Club:
  • Sumair was the Parramatta Second Grade team’s leading wicket-taker (25 wickets @ 20.92).
  • He was the Parramatta Poidevin-Gray Shield team’s (Under 21) leading wicket-taker (19 wickets @ 11.32).
  • Winner of the ‘John Benaud Award’ – Rookie of the Year.
  • Poidevin-Gray Shield ‘Lou Benaud Bowling Award’ winner.

Selected in Second grade in his debut with Parramatta in 2024/25 he quickly established his credentials with the club. It was an impressive effort to head the team’s bowling claiming 25 wickets @ 20.92 - featuring a determined performance in a losing Qualifying Final where Northern District rattled up a massive total on a flat Mark Taylor Oval wicket Sumair captured 4/71 (26 overs) – the manner of his toil in this game earmarked him as a definite First grade prospect.

He also made some handy cameos with the bat, the best being a forceful 79 v. Gordon during which he added 125 runs for the 7th wicket with Dhanvi Vemulapalli. 

Sumair likewise also produced an impressive start to his Parramatta Poidevin-Gray Shield career in 2024/25 leading the attack he grabbed 19 wickets @ 11.32 – (B.B. – Sydney 4/14 v. Sydney plus 31* with the bat, 3/35 v. Bankstown, 2/7 v. Penrith, 2/14 v. Sutherland, 2/28 v. Norths [QF]). 

The 2025/26 season proved to be a watershed in Sumair’s career, after starting in Second grade injuries to the First grade fast bowling stocks saw him elevated to the top grade where he cemented a spot for the remainder of the season. 

As his confidence grew, he bowled very proficiently and looked increasingly comfortable in First grade. Indeed, by the season’s end, in the absence of injured Parramatta bowling spearhead Michael Sullivan, he led the team’s attack in the Semi Final capturing 3/87 v. Manly.

His First grade season’s haul was a creditable 20 wickets @ 29.05 (B.B. – 2/28 v. Fairfield, 4/33 v. ND, 4/44 v. Mosman, 3/87 v. Manly [QF]); and he made 151 runs @ 16.77 (H.S. – 49 v. Manly, 34 v. ND). 

Sumair was also a member of the NSW Metro Under 19 team that competed in the National Championships in 2025/26.

The stage is now set for him to advance his game to another level in First grade in the upcoming 2026/27.
