Phoebe Howe will be joining the UTS North Sydney Bears
Phoebe Howe will be joining the UTS North Sydney Bears for the coming season as an overseas player from the UK. A rising star of the Surrey Academy, Phoebe will bring top-order class, seam bowling, and hopefully enough Percy Pig gummy sweets for sharing! We asked Phoebe a few questions to get to know her ahead of her arrival into Australia.
How did you fall in love with cricket?
My Dad has always played and enjoyed watching cricket and we would often spend many an afternoon sat watching a game. As I got older I often had a ball in my hand throwing it around with friends or playing catch in the pool on holiday. This led me to joining my local cricket club aged 7 and the rest is history
What is your favourite cricketing memory?
My best memory in cricket came when I was playing for Spencer Cricket Club U15s a few years back. That year the team was made up of some good friends. We were a strong team all contributing to a successful season which resulted in us qualifying for the U16 National Finals a year early for our age group and getting a fun overnight stay.
How do you balance cricket with everything else in your life?
This season in the UK has been a particularly busy one as I was finishing school, taking my A Level exams and enjoying time with family and friends. I found it best to be organised and plan well in advance to make sure I did not over commit in any part of my life. This meant I was able to train and play matches whilst still enjoying the other aspects of my life.

What is the most challenging obstacle you’ve faced recently?
At the start of last season, I experienced a stress injury in my lower back after having an intense winter with lots of hockey and cricket. This led me to miss out on the first few weeks of the new season to focus on recovery and physio. This was frustrating as after a long winter of nets all I wanted to do was get out in the middle, but it forced me to be resilient.
You’re coming to us straight from your UK season. What was the highlight of the English summer on the pitch?
My last game for my school 1st XI team was the 100-ball National Final at the prestigious and picturesque Wormsley ground. It was a highly competitive game where I took a wicket with my final delivery and scored the winning runs with the bat to guide us to victory. A great way to finish my school cricket career!
What will you always have in your lunch box?
I’ll always have some Percy Pigs (iconic soft pig shaped gummy sweets in the UK) in case I need a sugar boost and extra energy!
What life lessons have you learnt from cricket?
Cricket is full of highs and lows, I think it’s important to be able to put disappointment behind you and not dwell on them too much and celebrate successes both individually and as a team. This carries through to all other areas of life as well.
